Utility Fiber Installation Support – OPGW Project

JDH supported a critical OPGW fiber build in Indianapolis by ensuring all splicing and testing met required performance standards despite challenges with new cable materials. By identifying issues early and working through them with the client, the project stayed on track and delivered a reliable network. This project involved an OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) fiber installation in Indianapolis, Indiana, for a confidential utility partner. JDH’s scope included testing cable reels prior to installation, completing splicing at multiple locations, terminating fiber in three control houses, and performing final route testing. This project is the first of several planned builds, making early performance and consistency especially important.

A key challenge was coordinating across multiple teams and contractors, along with adapting to a new fiber manufacturer introduced on this project. Our team identified differences in how the fiber performed during splicing, which led to inconsistent test results early on. We compared the new material with fiber used on previous builds and worked closely with the client to review findings. After several discussions and adjustments to our splicing approach, we were able to bring all connections within required specifications and keep the project moving forward.
